Applying Cluster Lashes: How to Choose and Apply

Revisiting a lash cluster guide for those who didn’t see the first one, or just want a bit more explanation. The first thing to remember about cluster lashes is that they are very different from full strip lashes. They’re not meant to alter the look of your eyes. They aren’t there to stand in place of your natural lashes the way some girls use strip lashes.

Used right, they are meant to bulk up what you already have while staying very invisible and natural-looking. Try these if you:

Don’t like or want the unnatural look of full-strip lashes

Find full-strip lashes hard to apply

Can’t find strip lashes that are the right size for your eye

Don’t want to alter the look of your lash line

Choosing the right length:

Cluster lashes usually come in 3 approximate lengths:

Short: 1 cm (0.35-0.4”) - usually only for very small eyes

Long: 1.5 cm (0.6”) - for longer-than-average natural lashes

Medium: 1.2 cm (0.45”)

Unlike full strip lashes, it’s not “the longer the better”. Clusters should ideally be just a little longer than your own outer lashes (typically the longest on your eye). Most times we just go for the medium length because they go with most eyes.

TIP: If you intend to apply clusters all across your lash line from inside to outside corners, you will need to buy 2 different lengths because inner lashes are shorter.

DEMO:

1. Hold the lashes with the knots pointing down. Then using tweezers, grip each cluster gently pull upwards in the direction of the lash tips (like if you were tweezing your brows).

2. The glue should be applied on the top side of the knot (imagine applying a pin-head amount of glue to the top of the lash knot with the lashes curving upwards. Not the tip or the bottom.

At this point, you can apply glue to 2-3 clusters and let them set for about 30-40 seconds or until the glue starts to go grey. Any sooner and the glue will be too wet. (If your lash clusters shift and slip around, your glue isn’t dry enough.)

3. Now, assuming your eye makeup is done and you’ve curled your natural lashes and applied a touch of mascara, using your tweezers, apply the strips to the UNDERSIDE of your lashes, sticking right to where the lashes go into the skin. If you try to drop the lashes in from the top, it will be much harder to control the direction of their hairs, AND they’ll look less natural because the knots would show.

NOTE: You can choose a different type of glue which is permanent. (Lash Tite adhesive by Ardell for example.) This is what is used in salons where they do your lashes and it lasts for a week. But it makes cleaning your lashes and removing makeup difficult, so I don’t suggest there.

PLACEMENT:

You can choose between 3 options when it comes to placement of clusters.

1. Along whole lash line. You use short or medium clusters on the inner half and then switch to medium or long clusters on the outer half. This is often done for celebrities who want a super-natural full lash look.

2. You apply only medium or long clusters to the outer halves of the eyes. This emphasizes the outer corners of the eyes more, and helps if you want to lift the outer corners or to elongate close-set eyes. (This is what I did for the demo.

3. Same as option 2, but you shift the clusters towards the middle of the eye, and concentrate the longest clusters not on the outer ends, but on the center. This creates the appearance of a rounder and more doll-like shape.
